Utgarda-Loki (Loki of the Outyards), Jotunn (giant) leader and master of the Juotunheimr fortress of Utgaror, is also one of the most powerful users of illusion in the Nine Worlds.
Even the gods Thor and Loki have fallen prey to Utgarda-Loki spells.
In one famous case, Utgarda-Loki challenged Thor, and Loki (accompanied their servants Roskva & Thjalfi) to a series of difficult tasks.
After the two gods failed in every challenge, Utgarda-Loki releveled he had used his illusion powers to fool and defeat the Asgardians.
Thor, always short tempered, was so angered at being tricked decided to us his might hammer, Mjolnir, to kill Utgarda-Loki only to find that the Jotunn was but an illusion.
Thor then vented his anger on Utgarda-Loki's fortress, which also promptly disappeared as it too was nothing more than a phantasm.
Having the last laugh over the frustrated god, Utgarda-Loki, easily escaped their rage and failed attempts at revenge and went back to his true fortress. Here he plans further tricks on the pesky gods, until the time of Ragnarök when he plans to destroy them once and for all.
