War Between the States Queen of Battle

As Napoleon said, "Cannon are the Queen of the Battlefield." This was never truer in the 19th century than during the American Civil War.

Here we have a mixed battery of Confederate artillery pieces.

Left to right- a 10 pounder (2.9 in) Parrot Rifle Cannon (max effective range 1850 yards) and two 12 pounder bronze smoothbore "Napoleons" (max effective range of 1680 yards) Napoleons were very popular and the most common field pieces of the war.

World War Two in Boxes

I have worked on the 700+ figures (plus another 105 that are not pictured) above since 2012, mostly in the last three years. They are a combination of metal and plastic 25mm to 28mm pieces from Pulp Figures, Wargames Foundry, Perry Miniatures and Warlord Games.  A big change from the World War II,  1/285 CinC size pieces I painted and played with in the 1970's &'80's. Aside from the Panzer III none of my Second World War tanks and other AFV's are in this post.

Rapid Fire!

On the firing line, a below strength section of the famed Desert Rats lays down rapid fire from their Bren Gun, Tommy Gun, rifle grenades and rifles.

Command and 1st Section

Ready for action in the early years of the Second World War, the command section and the 1st section of a unit of Desert Rats.

Armed with a Bren gun, two inch mortar, Boys anti-tank rifle, Tommy Guns and rifles the section can fight their way through any difficulty.

Rebels on Watch

In the Western Theater of the War Between the States a small outpost with its watch tower is manned by a small detachment of the 1st Kentucky Regiment of the Confederate Army.

The watch tower gives a 360 degree view above the stockade walls.

When an enemy is sighted, the captain can call out commands to his command.

Post 500 "Two Centuries of the USMC"

From the Shores of Tripoli to the jungles of Vietnam here stand the men of the USMC ready to fight for freedom.

Our first fought pirates in Africa, the British in 1812 and Indians in Florida, the next fought brother against brother in the War Between the States. In a hurry to reach Belleau Woods, a "Devil Dog" from the trenches of the Great War has jumped positions with the veteran of the Spanish American War.

While fighting in the Banana Wars of the 1920's and 30's, this old leather neck stops for a quick smoke with his pipe. With his Tommy Gun in hand, our next Marine is ready for service from China to Wake Island. Calling in fire support in the tropic jungles of the island hoping campaigns of World War II. this radioman does his duty in Hell on Guadalcanal; while our last in line looks for VC in the steaming jungles of South Vietnam.  Two centuries of the 236 year history of the USMC-Happy Birthday.

"Let's Go You Wolverines!"

Capitan Klotze leads his Michigan men into combat against the Rebs with his battle cry, "Lets go you Wolverines!"

In the War Between the States, Michigan and its neighboring states were called the Western States. Battles fought west of the Appalachian Mountains were refered to as Western battles fought by armies of the West.

Western Union Regiments preferred the soft black hat vs the kepi that was more common in Eastern raised regiments.

As with most of the infantry on both sides, these men were armed with .58 cal, single shot, "cap & ball," rifled muskets and triangular bayonets. The officers would most often carry a "cap & ball," revolver in .32-44 cal.

Johnny Reb Firing Line

A Rebel squad of infantry from the 1st Kentucky Regiment gets into a firing line during the War for States Rights. A standard uniform was virtually unknown for most CSA units after the first year of the war and this unit is no different. Wearing a combination of civilian, Confederate and captured Union clothing, these Johnny Reb's fight for their beliefs. The men are armed with .58 cal rifled muskets and bayonets. The Lieutenat has a saber and .44 Colt Army revolver. These are 28mm plastic Perry Miniatures.

On the Land or On the Sea

Moving through the ruins of Norfolk Naval Yard, this patrol of US Marines supports the Union and Constitution in the War of the Rebellion. Armed with .58 cal rifled muskets and a Marines best friend, his bayonet, these men are ready to take on Johnny Reb. Lieutenant Walingfords relies on his sword and trusty .36 cal Colt Navy revolver to see him through any conflicts. Through the myst's of 150 years these US Marines join my growing ranks of USMC units in their historic uniforms throughout the history of the Corps.
