BEF Northern France 1914

News Photos from the front: Northern Franch August 1914, British Expeditionary Forces (BEF) advance through a ruined French village to stop the advance of Imperial German troops.
When it comes to stopping power, nothing works better than a battery of the excellent Vickers .303 machine gun. The Huns will soon turn tail and run back to Germany in the face of these brave Tommie's.

Happy New Year-1918 Style

Another New Years' Celebration full of lights in the sky. But on January 1, 1918, the fire in the sky wasn't from fireworks.

Rather it was from two sets of massive warring forces the Allies vs the Central Powers. Here an Imperial German 77mm field gun.
And its opposite number the famous French Soixante-Quinze (75) mm. None of those fighting in the Great War knew that 1918 would be the last year of the terrible conflict. Yet it was and New Year's Day 1919, saw a World that while not at total peace, as least saw the guns of the Great War silent.

These are metal pieces from Old Glory that I painted for my Great War Armies back in 2010.

May 2023 be a good one for you and yours, and hopefully the current guns of war will fall silent as they did in the Great War 125 Years ago.

August 1914-BEF Victoriously Advances in Northern France

                                                                News from the Front

The British Government has released the photos of valiant British Tommie's advancing through a smashed village somewhere in Northern France. The government reports that our troops are meeting, defeating and pushing back the Imperial Greman forces.

Covering our victorious forces movements are units of Vickers heavy machine guns such as these.  What enemy could stand up to such troops?

In reality the British were forced to retreat from the initial German attack until the Battle of the Marne on September 5-12, 1914.  At first the British reporters were allowed to give the names of the villages/towns where the BEF was located. Astute readers with maps noted that while the British Government was reporting strings of victories, the location of the British Army was in fact speedily retreating from the frontier and moving ever closer to Paris. The British Government, realizing the danger of such defeatist information, quickly instituted censorship of the press that was to remain in effect until the end of the war.

Even a visiting lady needs a few handmaiden slaves

Tribune Gaius Travus Lucacius has warmly welcomed his good friend, the Lady Julia Drucilla Thurgia, into his home by loaning her the use of three of his favorite house slaves, Potensculus, Vinuma and Papilla.

All these ladies are 28mm metal pieces from Warlord.

Are you cool enough Master?

With her fan in hand, house slave Potensculus is ready to cool her Master, Tribune Gaius Travus Lucacius, as he relaxes. Potensculus takes her duties very serious, especially as this is an easy and therefore prime position.

Knowing her masters tastes, she makes sure to show all her assets in an attempt to win further favors, and less work from an appreciative Gaius Travus.

More Wine Mistress?

Vinuma, a house slave to the family of Tribune Gaius Travus Lucacius, offers wine in gold goblets to her masters wife and her "guest."

Vinuma has learned to serve and not notice the male visitors that frequent the household when the Tribune is away on official business.

She feels quite lucky that the tastes of the visitors are sedated by the Mistress and do not require more personal service from Vinuma...Master Travus requires more than enough of her "attention."

Vinuma is a 28mm metal piece from Warlord.

Your Command Master?

Papilla, a house slave of the first rank is ready for any duties her master may require.

Captured in a Legion raid on her Barbaric homeland lead by her new master Tribune Gaius Travus Lucacius, Papilla has resigned herself to a life of slavery and has decided to make the best of her lot.

She owns nothing, not even her name. "Papilla" was given to her by her new master as her given name, Brusta Grunstochter, was to "barbaric" for his Roman sensibilities.

Papilla is a 28mm metal piece from Warlord.

Lady Julia is...Ready...

Lady Julia Drucilla, former slave and new wife to Senator Gaius Julius Thurgia stands ready to full fill her new duties as a member of the Patrician class. While unusual, it was not unknown for Romans to free slaves and take them into their household. Julia Drucilla Thurgia's obvious attributes may have had some assistance in the upgrading of her status. Julia Drucilla is a 28mm metal piece from Warlord.

HMG Hard Point

A Browning .30 Heavy Machine Gun is set up in a hard point defensive position. The bane of many an infantryman, the Browning cut a swath though those foolish enough to face its killing firepower. This is another fine metal piece from Pulp Figures.

Foreign Legion on Patrol

In the mountains of a far off French Colony the men of the Foreign Legion fight and die for the glory of France.
These brave men faced what ever hardships nature and man could throw at them while protecting the Empire of France.
These are 28mm metal miniatures from Renegade.
