Dragons vs Mages-Battle to the Finish

A battle royal between a fleet of Dragon Lords and Shroud Mages is brewing. The proud Dragon Lord Fleet contained the Battleship Quetzalcoatl, Cruisers Xiuhcotal & Shen Lung with the Frigates Apep, Galeru, Jabberwock, Yam-Nahar, Smerg and Nessy. (Here are the pictures of the battle between Shroud Mages forces of Thomas and my Dragon Lords and it was deadly.) The Mage Fleet- Battleship Grand Master Radtagast, Cruisers Sorceress & Wizard, Frigates Conjure, Clairvoyance, Rapture, Voodoo, Alchemy and Sorcery. First Blood to the Dragon Lords as Alchemy takes a hit from Cruiser Xiuhcoatl.(the Dragon Lords were abandoned by the dice gods in the early stages of the game, I only one imitative once in the first seven turns and that was by using a strategy card. On the other hand Tom's were hot as always-I really have to take that boy to Vegas some day) Best to leave sleeping Mages alone as the return fire was devastating on the Dragon Lords. Hits were scored on the frigates Yam-Nahar (sunk), Smerg (sunk), Nessy (sunk), Apep (sunk) and a critical bridge hit on the Zeng Lung . In return Sorcery was sent to the bottom. (Not a good turn for the Dragon Lords. Yet it could have been worse, Radtagast using 12 dice with eagle eyed gunners-whiffed funniest event of the entire battle.) Thomas, Admiral of the Red, readies his next decisive blow against the forces of the Dragon Lords. As the Dragon Lord frigates burn, hits are scored on both Mage cruisers. Sorceress takes a critical to her steering-which she promptly repairs (Tom's hot dice again). The Mage frigates charge forward like wasps while the Radtagast pounds away at medium range. (One advantage the Dragon Lords have is speed as the Mage cruisers and battleship were very slow in this engagement.) In a flurry of shooting the last Dragon Lord frigates are sent to the bottom and the Mage frigates set about stinging the Quetzalcoatl. (Just one hit a turn from stern rakes-but those add up after awhile.) In an act of desperation, Xiuhcoatl closes to point blank range, fires both broadsides, and misses! Shen Lung sinks and things look bleak for the Dragon Lords. Sorceress rams Xiuhcoatl who promptly captures the cruiser in a brutal boarding action. Things are looking a little better for the Dragon Lords. The Quetzalcoatl maneuvers violently to try to A)get in effective range of the cruiser Wizard B)keep out of range of the slowly advancing Radtagast, C) smash as many of those pesky frigates as possible and most important D)avoid hitting that blasted rock island dead ahead! Yet another stern rake! (All the capital ships have been taking steady damage throughout the battle, the next turns will tell the tale.) Another frigate bites the deep, but the Quetzalcoatl is now suffering from heavy damages from the constant pounding. The Radtagast finishes off the Xiuhcotal, the Quetzalcoatl sinks the Wizard, the frigates are going down and the captured Sorceress slowly sails away to safer haven. The battleships are all that survive, and they pound away as the range closes. The final fight is ready between the battleships and each is already severly damaged. With a final blast of gunpowder the Radtagast is crippled with more than 90% of her hull gone and the Quetzalcoatl sinks below the waves. (After winning the final initiative I thought I had the Radtagast at my mercy-oops. I miscalculated and thought Radtagast was down to her last hull hit like Quetzalcoatl was, unfortunately she had two hull hits left and I only did one point of damage. A great end to a bloody battle that finished about as close as any one could be.) With their entire fleet lost, the only bright spot for the Dragon Lords is the captured cruiser Wizard-the secrets of the Shroud Mage technologies will soon be added to the master builders of the fleet .

When Cats Attack at Sea

In the midst of a sea battle the dread giant monster "Cookie" rises from the depths.

Showing total disregard for the puny ships of war of the Imperials and Shroud Mages the massive beast overwhelms several with her tail. Luckily for all, as in most interactions with the wilds of nature, little damage was done. The giant creature quit the contested field and the battle resumed with an eventual victory by the Imperials.

The ships are resin castings from Spartan Games, Cookie is a one of a kind original.

Never Tackle a Battleship Alone!

The remains of frigate scout squadron Snake Eyes (Zu, Ness & Scylla) have brought word to cruiser patrols Vipers Bite (Scatha & Smaug) and Wryverns Claw (Glaurung & Xiuhcoatl) that the remains of a Shroud Mage battle squadron is trying to escape a recent battle. The two understrength cruiser squadrons are ordered to destroy the interlopers. (This was a standard scenario from the Uncharted Seas rules. The Dragon Lords were allowed 50% more than the Shroud Mages. The only victory conditions were the battleship had to be destroyed by the Dragon Lords or exit off the board for a Shroud Mage victory).

The battleship Enchantress Le Fey and cruiser consort Sorceress are making full speed to try and escape before more powerful Dragon Lords units can close the noose.

The Dragon Lords decide to use their speed advantage to surround the advancing Shroud Mage ships. Command signals are confused which causes Squadron Vipers Bite to mask Wyverns Claw so the latter could not fire. The frigates move to try for rear rakes later.

Not wanting to make the same error, the cruiser Sorceress prepares to pull ahead of the Enchantress to open favorable firing arcs for both ships.

The Sorceress takes the brunt of the firepower of the three squadrons of Dragon Lords (to the surprise of many, the frigates did the lions share of damage on the cruiser).

The situation is clear, the Dragon Lords are trying to box in the Shroud Mage ships. The Sorceress has taken fearful damage while the Scatha has been lightly hit. While as yet all shots against the battleship have bounced off harmlessly, confidence is high in the Dragon Lord ships.

Then the Enchantress La Fey lets loose with a fearsome broadside and the Smaug disappears as her hull disintegrates and the Scatha is seriously damaged. In vengeance the Sorceress dies from a volley of accurate combined fire from the frigates.
The Enchantress La Fey now comes under fire from the entire Dragon Lords fleet...and comes through unscathed! In return Glaurung looses half her hull from another shattering broadside.

Throwing caution to the wind the Scatha attempts to close and board the Enchantress La Fey. Big mistake, the massive undamaged battleship crushes the hull of Scatha sinking her with all hands. To little to late the frigate squadron rakes the mighty battle ship and slightly damages her hull. Seeing the swift demise of the Scatha, and with only two cruisers, one crippled, left the Dragon Lord loose heart and pile on all speed to quit the field of battle. (Through a miss reading of the rules the end was originally a bit different as the two ships fought a boarding action and the crew of the Scatha massacred the battleships crew and captured the ship. I had miss read the collision rules and mistakenly underestimated the damage done to Scatha so she was able to close and board-oops. A quick reread and the error was exposed and the already 50% damaged Scatha slipped ingloriously beneath the waves.)

This game had Richard as the Shroud Mages admiral while I controlled the Dragon Lords. My initial moves (except the frigates who did almost all the damage the Shroud Mage ships took) were very poor. I greatly underestimated the staying power of my cruisers and over estimated their firepower. Lessons learned: 1-Only massed fire at close range (or lots of lucky dice) from lighter ships can harm a battleship. 2-Closing with a battleship is going to lose you a ship a turn sunk or seriously damaged. 3-Raking is very effective vs any ship. 4-Never-never-never collide/ram an undamaged battleship with a damaged cruiser! Regardless, it was a fun, fast game.

Eyes of the Dragon Lords Fleet

Frigates are the long range scouts an therefore the eyes of the fleet. The Zu, Ness, Scylla, Tiamat, Typhon and Yam-nahar are some of the fastest frigates in the Uncharted Seas and serve the Dragon Lord admirals well. With their high speed and incredible maneuverability they are as deadly in a fight as they are sleek. These frigates are resin castings from Spartan Games.

Dragon Lords on the Prowl

Silently slipping out of the gloom on magic dragon sails, the Dragon Lords cruisers Scatha, Smaug, Shen Lung and Xiuhcoatl hunt for enemy shipping sailing on the Uncharted Seas. Each ship is crewed with battle hardened veterans who relish in the most violent of combats. Their magic dragon sails give each ship unprecedented speed and maneuverability-great assets in any sea battle. The Scatha, Smaug, Shen Lung and Xiuhcoatl are resin castings from Spartan Games.
