Successful snipers are well concealed and very patient.
Such as Josef "Sepp" Allerberger an Austrian born member of the 144 Gebirgsjager (light infantry mountain troops) who was credited with 257 kills. His camouflage is a unique German technique using an umbrella covered in greenery that was easy and quick to emplace and take down.
Here he is using a sniper variant of the Karbiner 98 with 4X scope. For personal-up close combat he preferred to carry a MP 40 submachine gun rather than a lighter pistol. His career was on the Eastern Front, which he survived.
He returned to Austria and died at the age of 85 in 2010. Before he died, his memories of the horrors of the war were written up by Albrecht Wacker and published in 2005 as Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoris of Sepp Allerberger, Knights Cross. From this work, it is easy to see that the trauma of the war never really left his memories even after 60 years.
Josef Allerberger is a plastic I painted in September.
