Skirmishers, like these British light company members facing American Continentals, were an important part of late 18th century warfare. They were used mostly to mask the movement of one's troops, harass opposing lines and disrupt the enemy's movements.
Most skirmishers were armed with the same smoothbore flintlock muskets of the regular line soldiers.
Yet some unites were armed with rifled flintlocks which gave them much better range. But for most armies, rifles were considered too expensive and slow to load to be cost effective for 18th century armies.
