In a time long lost the Xochiyaoyotl, "Flower Wars," were fought in the lands of the Mexica/Aztecs. These were combats designed to demonstrate military power, train warriors and capture prisoners for religious human sacrifice.
More ritual than normal military campaigns, Flower Wars were prescheduled between the opponents, usually the Triple Alliance of the Aztecs vs other nearby city states like Tlaxcala.
As in all combats of the era, capturing an opponent for sacrifice was a way of social advancement for common warriors. As special awards were given for the number of prisoners captured, it encouraged the bravest warriors to risk their own lives to capture the most victims possible.
The Flower Wars ended with the Spanish invasion and eventual conquest of the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century.
