Moon Knight (AKA Marc Spector) was a normal human until he "died" at the feet of a statue of the Egyptian "Moon God Khonshu" in an ancient tomb.
Khonshu healed his wounds and proclaimed Spector the "Moon's Knight-Left Fist of Khonshu."
From this point on his role as Moon Knight is to protect the innocent when he can and to avenge those he can't. While under Khonshu patronage, if Moon Knight "dies" he is resurrected to continue his struggles against injustice.
